Canada’s First Net-Zero Habitat for Humanity Build on an Indigenous Reserve.

Warrior Home has designed and built a net-zero-energy home in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce for the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nations community on the Neyaashiinigmiing Reserve.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that builds affordable housing options with the help of volunteers and donors.

The Chippewas of Nawash community is located in the Bruce Peninsula of Southwestern Ontario, and like many Indigenous communities, they face numerous housing issues. By partnering with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce to build 19 new homes, they hope to improve living conditions for residents and increase the reserve’s housing capacity.

Our contribution was an innovative and affordable single-family, detached home that was specifically designed with the family and community’s unique needs in mind while minimizing utility bills, maintenance costs, and the initial price of the home. Construction for the home began in June 2019 and was finished by December 2019.

Our team has entered this build into the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon - an international student competition - which has allowed us to showcase our housing solution, bring attention to Canada’s Indigenous housing issues on a global stage, and raise additional funds for our partner community.

Warrior Home will virtually attend the Smithsonian Folklife Festival with an exhibition showcasing these aspects in April 2021.
