Since 2002, the US Department of Energy has invited student design teams around the world to compete in the Solar Decathlon (formerly Race To Zero) student competition. Designed to challenge collegiate students who are interested in building/material science, construction and engineering, students from around the world compete to design sustainable homes to help communities of their choice.

From retrofits to new builds and from townhomes to single detached homes, UWaterloo has been participating in both the design and build challenges since its humble beginnings in 2016. Our team is ready to implement new building science concepts and tackle new categories in future competitions.

Regardless of outcome, students who attend the competition have chances to network with experts in the structural, building science and energy industries, meet teams from as far as Australia and South Korea and have a great time bonding in Colorado!
