Building for positive change.

For the 2021-2023 Solar Decathlon Build Challenge, our team has partnered with the Kitchener- Waterloo Urban Native Wigwam Project (KWUNWP), a non-profit urban Indigenous affordable housing organization, to redesign and retrofit a century old home. Our goal is to transform the home into an affordable, net-zero energy home centered around energy efficiency, sustainability and resilience.

Our Build Partner

Warrior Home has partnered with the Kitchener-Waterloo Urban Native Wigwam Project (KWUNWP), a non-profit organization that has served the First Nations, Metis and Inuit (Status or Non-Status) population of the Waterloo Region since 1987. The KWUNWP provides culturally safe and affordable housing options for the Indigenous community in Waterloo Region, Ontario.

Background

In December 2020, the KWUNWP received a surplus property from the Regional Municipality of Waterloo as part of an affordable housing initiative. The property is a two-storey, three bed, one bath brick house originally built in the 1890s in the historic neighborhood of Victoria Park, Kitchener. The property sat vacant for a number of years and Warrior Home has partnered with the KWUNWP to retrofit the home and to make the home livable for Indigenous families in need.

Our Scope of Work

  • Design and Build: Warrior Home and the KWUNWP will facilitate the implementation of Warrior Home’s net-zero energy redesign

  • Social Responsibility: The KWUNWP will be providing the retrofitted home for an Indigenous family in need of affordable housing

  • Backed by Experts: Warrior Home’s expert advisors from the University of Waterloo Faculty of Engineering will provide oversight for the project, sign and stamp our drawings and assume professional responsibility for the design of the home.
